Ah LJ. Where I make jokes that are too geeky for my blog. [13 Mar 2008|10:29am]
Via Krugman it turns out crazed anime fans are right after all. Samauri steel is critical to the global nuclear industry.

Dining out to help the homeless [26 Feb 2008|05:12pm]
Montgomery County readers: Some local restuarants are participating in "Thanksgiving in February" tonight. There's a hundred some restuarants that will donate between 10 and 25% of meal cost to help the homeless. List is here. Sorry for the late notice, I'd forgotten all about it until my parents reminded me.

Double post with blog, review of Andrew's Excerpt [15 Feb 2008|05:56pm]

To read it yourself, here's the prologue and here's chapter 1 (click the button on the right side of the screen to download).

Meta-fairy tales are all the rage of late, so the big question is what does "Waiting for My Happily Ever After" bring to the table.  In short, the new factor is writers as the nemeses of characters.  I won't go into too much detail since the excerpt itself introduces the larger world first through hints in discussions and then action.  I'm interested in the world and its conflicts, which is good as just subverting existing fairytales is pretty redundant these days.  Moreover, how magic works and the characters' world interacts with ours seems fairly straightforward, which is nice as playing loose with those rules can easily undermine a story.

There's a fair number of characters introduced pretty quickly.  It's a bit too early for me to tell how well I'll like them.  Thankfully the Prince Charming character, who could easily just be an annoying chauvinist seems to show some depth in addition to his multiple flaws.  My mind isn't made up yet on the protagonist, but she does have a good line about heroics that drew my attention and makes me think she has some potential.

As for writing style and pacing, the excerpt was a quick read although I sometimes lost track of the action.  Quick-paced and light feels right for this story and means it's pretty easy for you, dear reader, to judge for yourself.

Feeling kinda obsolete [12 Feb 2008|08:13am]
After checking in with the local campaign office, I discovered that they're just doing canvasing and not lit distribution at polling places.

I don't doubt that they know what they're doing, but my youthful political activity was always lit distribution. I'm rather good at it, can read people well, and am pretty dang mobile and capable of dealing with pedestrians from multiple directions.

Going out knocking on doors just doesn't feel the same. That said, people with a lot more experience canvasing may feel the same but in reverse.

Oh well, have a lot more money to donate now than I used to.

For DC non-blog readers [06 Feb 2008|05:16pm]
There's a fundraiser for Obama at McGinty's in Silver Spring tonight at 6:30. If anyone's interested and let's me know, I'll match your donation up to $25. I'll cut this off if I get too many respondants.

Break Through Novel Contest: Waiting for My Happily Ever After (Double post with my blog) [21 Jan 2008|08:09am]
(This item is dual posted with my blog)

A friend of mine, Andrew Schneider, has gotten into the semi-finals of Amazon’s Breakthrough Novel contest. Sensibly enough, the way to get to later stages is to get read and get reviewed.

So here’s the link to the sample of his story: Waiting for My Happily Ever After (Note the prologue is in the first review)

And the blurb:

Waiting for My Happily Ever After finds classic fairy-tale characters trying to adjust to the modern world. Set in Washington D.C.-- amid lobbyists, immigration hassles, bureaucratic red tape, and exploitative authors in search of their next big break-- Sleeping Beauty and Lancelot knock out skim lattes and rehash the glory days. Sleeping Beauty, our chain-smoking heroine stuck in her mid-twenties since the Dark Ages, is having an identity crisis. Is she more than just a pretty face? Complicating matters is the return of her estranged husband Prince Charming, her crush on Lancelot, and some unofficial attention from Hank, her immigration officer at the Department of Homeland Security. And then her friends start disappearing. What’s a girl to do?

I will be posting my review later today. Anyways reviews are definitely encouraged as is passing on the link.

I'm live! [24 Dec 2007|10:49am]
Just got logged into X-Box live for the first time. My ID: Grysar (shocking I know).

If you know me, feel free to friend me.

Also, of interest to fellow RPers. I've created a bunch of my characters in Rock [Band]. Currently, I've got one FFXI related (guitar), Haruko (guitar), Blayne (singer), Jinx (drummer), and I'm presently working on Theo (singer). I'll probably try Alrex and maybe my current DnD guy later. I've had an easier time with BESM characters than with DnDers. I'm not satisfied with Blayne yet.

Character Question Meme [06 Dec 2007|03:10pm]
Pulled from [info]millenia and [info]rowyn2001

Original Character meme
1. Choose a few of your own characters.
2. Make them answer the following questions.
3. Tag three people? Nah, this is just for my personal fun.

Jinx: Cowboy from a native tribe. Has both good and bad luck in extreme.
Haruko: [Tokyo schoolgirl, mechanic extrordinaire, and water mage.]
Theo: Steampunk era entrepreneur/adventurer. Could be a captain Planet villain.
Blayne: Gnome spell battery and priestess of Loki.
Alrex: Curmudgeon and psion.

I'm going with [five] characters. When a character didn't have anything interesting to say on the topic I skipped 'em.

Other characters available upon request.

[Update: Added Haruko's description and fixed the number of characters]

Question for foodies [27 Nov 2007|08:35pm]
I'm making up an item for my work place's international buffet. Anyone suggest any recipes? Would have to be an item that isn't too hard and that can be commuted in and be left in the kitchen until lunchtime.

If I use your recipe, I'll either cook for you at some point or cover a dinner, whatever is easier. There's actually a vote on the best dish and looks like there aren't that many competitors, so I figure if I come out with a great dish I might just win it.

[Update: I have my recipe.]

Anyone know anything about Sadamitsu the Destroyer [27 Nov 2007|05:46pm]
[ mood | curious ]

Not that long ago I watched a preview of it on 12 Kingdoms DVDs and was reminded that I quite like the Western soundtrack-type music. The series didn't look that good but if it's known for good music I'd be tempted to get a CD.

I’ve thrown one up on Google Web Albums.  It's about 230 so about 20 minutes at 5 seconds a picture.  I think I may later throw in a few slides to establish location, but I haven't found a good tool for that yet and am a bit too busy to make them by hand.

Anyone want a $25 copy of Babylon 5: Season 1? [21 Nov 2007|02:37pm]
It was on sale over at Borders (for $20 something, $22 after tax). The series tends to be heinously overpriced, so I figured I should pick up an extra copy. If you're interested, $25 plus shipping. If you make it easy for me to get it to you, than at cost ($22).

[Note: Offer not available if I don't know you]

Found a buyer.

My syndicated feed [16 Nov 2007|01:33pm]
I think [info]amalthya actually set this up back in the day but I didn't properly advertise it to people who didn't check comments.

So, if you want to access my blog through LJ, just go here and add it to your friends list.

I've also figured out how I'll probably handle the balance of privacy and LJ accessibility. I think I'll just friendslock my archive. So every couple months or so I'll friendslock all posts that are more than a month old. So weirdos who don't get an account on principle and people who read LJ through other feeds can still read my new stuff but there's not a big history out there that's available to everyone.

Tales of Interest! [10 Nov 2007|10:47pm]
[ mood | gleeful ]

Having returned from China and dealt with my stuff, my first order of business was riding with Kate ([info]kamalloy) up to her house and asking her if she wished to get married. Happily, she did! ^_^ We're currently planning the wedding for summer '09. Details as we work them out. While I do tend to do my fair share and fully acquaint myself with the planning arrangements, I will spare you guys the boring bits.
